Ajax wins its second consecutive State Cup crown by beating Hicksville 3-2 in overtime!! The Manhattan boys tied the game with eight minutes left in regulation and tallied the winner in the first overtime period. Ajax will be representing Eastern New York in the Region 1 Championships in West Virginia.
Ajax won the FC Delco Tournament on Memorial Day weekend, with victories over some of the strongest teams in the country, including Prince William and TAP Barcelona. Ajax's success catapulted the team into the top ten-ranked teams in the country.
2010 has been a fantastic year for the Manhattan boys, with five tournament championships as well as a 3rd place finish in the ultra-competitive Region 1 Premier League. Ajax's League record ensures that it will return to Region 1 Premier in 2011.
Ajax tryouts for the 2010-2011 season will be held on September 25th from 3-4:30PM on Randall's Island, field #70. New players should arrive to register at 2:30. If you're interested in trying out contact Mark Elliott (see above).
Coach's Biography
John Lathan made his professional debut at the age of 17 for Sunderland in the English Premier League and played for the Black Cats for several years, including 1973 when Sunderland captured the FA Cup. His playing career included stops at Mansfield Town, Carlisle and Portsmouth, where he was team captain. Once his playing career ended, Lathan became a coach in Australia and South Africa, before moving to New York in 2003. He has been coach of the Manhattan Ajax and other Manhattan Soccer Club teams since 2004.
